Hasanat (Hasan) M. Dewan is a veteran technology executive whose career spans Wall Street, global banking, financial technology and artificial intelligence. But in recent years, one location has become particularly important in his professional trajectory: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
After decades working with major financial institutions in the United States and Europe, Dewan moved into the emerging AI ecosystem of Abu Dhabi, taking senior positions connected to OurCrowd and Integrated Data Intelligence (IDI).
His career raises an important question: why has a veteran technology executive with decades of experience in global finance shifted his focus toward Abu Dhabi and artificial intelligence?
From Wall Street to Abu Dhabi’s AI Ecosystem
Dewan’s career began at Morgan Stanley, where he worked from 1994 to 2000. He subsequently held senior positions at Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, Russell Investments, BNY Mellon, E*TRADE and Cognizant.
His positions included:
- Principal – Morgan Stanley | 1994–2000
- Managing Director – Deutsche Bank | 2000–2005
- President & CTO – Merrill Lynch Canada Services / CTO Electronic Trading | 2005–2010
- CIO & Head of Global Technology and Operations – Russell Investments | 2010–2014
- CIO & Managing Director – BNY Mellon | 2014–2015
- CIO Applications & SVP Technology – E*TRADE | 2015–2017
- SVP & Head of Digital Engineering, Banking & Financial Services – Cognizant | 2017–2019
This career placed Dewan at the intersection of banking technology, electronic trading, cloud computing, data architecture and digital transformation.
The Abu Dhabi Chapter
The major shift came in the 2020s.
In February 2021, Dewan joined OurCrowd as Chief Innovation Officer & EVP Platform, with his role based in Abu Dhabi. His responsibilities included innovation, digital transformation and AI enablement, as well as work on public-private partnerships and the development of a global AI innovation center.
He later became CEO of Integrated Data Intelligence (IDI), an Abu Dhabi-based deep-tech AI company focused on investment intelligence for private markets.
IDI’s flagship platform, DANNA, uses artificial intelligence to assist investment professionals with areas including company screening, research, due diligence, deal-flow sourcing, portfolio analytics and predictive intelligence.
This placed Dewan directly inside Abu Dhabi’s rapidly developing technology and investment ecosystem.
Why Abu Dhabi Matters
Dewan’s move is significant because Abu Dhabi has increasingly positioned itself as a global center for artificial intelligence, investment and advanced technology.
His career provides an unusual bridge between two worlds: the traditional financial institutions of New York and London and the emerging AI investment ecosystem of Abu Dhabi.
His experience in electronic trading, financial data, enterprise technology and digital transformation is particularly relevant to the development of AI systems designed for investment and financial decision-making.
A Career Built Around Data and Technology
At E*TRADE, Dewan was responsible for technology development and digital transformation supporting millions of retail investors and traders.
At Russell Investments, he led global technology and operations and oversaw major infrastructure and cloud transformations.
At Cognizant, he built a digital engineering practice that exceeded $300 million in revenue within two years and involved the recruitment and training of thousands of engineering professionals.
These experiences help explain why his later move into AI investment technology in Abu Dhabi is more than a simple career change.
Education: Physics Meets Computer Science
Dewan’s academic background is equally technology-focused.
He earned a BA in Physics and Computer Science from Brandeis University between 1980 and 1984.
He subsequently earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University, completing the degree between 1990 and 1994.
His academic background in both physics and computer science preceded a career centered on computing, financial systems, data and artificial intelligence.
Family
Publicly available information identifies Rumana Ahmad Dewan as Dewan’s wife. The couple has three children.
One of their daughters, Zaynah Dewan, has a publicly visible social-media presence and an academic background connected to Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School.
